quirks and behaviors

If this has been posted before, I apologize. I just wanted to take a few minutes to discuss typical boxer quirks and some that seem (to me) to be not so typical.

Our old boy is your typical boxer, not too vocal unless in a good rumble or someone is at/near the front door. He's never been been a whiner. Max, though, is a constant crybaby. He whines for attention within one second of it begin denied. He whines to the old guy to play with him. He whines at the window for no apparent reason.

And he's a howler. My wife is a music teacher and often has students by for private clarinet lessons. While both boys love company of young people in our house, Max gets real riled for a clarinet. He will howl the entire lesson. I've tried covering his ears, doesn't matter. He'll sit there with my hands over his ears, howling like a hound dog from across the house with the bedroom door closed. Even the piano can get him going. The only thing Cassius has ever howled to is the high pitches that seem to come from answering machine messages, especially younger or female voices.

Showers and baths. While both dogs love our creek for wading and think the garden hose is the greatest toy on earth, Cassius hates baths. Always has. Max thinks baths are the greatest. He sits outside the shower curtain and cries to be let in EVERY day. Of course we know too many baths are not healthy, and he seems to know this, so he's content to sit outside, lick the tub rim and cry for his turn. Mention the "B" word and he runs to the bathroom and hops in the tub, no joke.

Both my boys play otter. They take a toy and lie on their back with toy clutched to their chests or mouth by front paws.

Licking. Both dogs love to ride in the car, but Max has the need to lick every window and seat in the car. I've never seen this from another boxer before.

Anyone else have similar or even wackier experiences? Silly question, I know.

Re: quirks and behaviors

Bayleigh is very vocal. She barks, whines and woo woos! She is also a licker and in the car loves to lick the windows.

My daughter plays the clarinet and acoustic guitar. Bayleigh loves to sing along!

She also loves baths. She has even jumped into the shower with me. Of course, on her way out of the shower, she yanks the curtain down!

Talking Re: quirks and behaviors

Lola is a window licker and Saffie was too! They both do/did the otter toy holding thing too!

Lola is a lot more vocal than Saffie, she has a yiff at everything and anything, and she howels when my mum plays the mouth organ!

The two of them loved balloons and footballs! Saffie was a football theif and would suddenly appear from bushed and sets of woods with a football in her mouth.... god only knows where she was finding them! Lol

Lola wants in the bath when someone else is in it but hates it when it's her turn! Saffie used to go into hiding at the mention of the word bath!

Re: quirks and behaviors

Neither of mine lick windows Harley loves car rides Foreman doesn't really like them he hate dh' truck shivers the whole time.

Both dogs will wade in the water but too their chests. Harley sinks like a rock where Foreman can swim but only when he falls in the lake or our pool.

Neither are big whiners.

Re: quirks and behaviors

What is it with the car windows? Washing them is a pain - it's like glue!!!! Fletcher sits back there and just goes to town on them He also HAS to be in the bathroom any time I am in there and MUST eat bubbles out of the bath. He is the only dog I have ever known that hides his toys and then walks around crying because he forgets where he's hidden them Also a howler - loves my sons guitar and harmonica

Re: quirks and behaviors

Zoie is the spoiled brat whiner. Doesn't matter what's going on, if you even look at one of the others, she's all over you growling and barking. She wants all your attention.

Cricket just growls instead of barking for the most part. If there's a reason, she might bark but it's one of those really gruff low barks. She also has an issue with the tongue. It's always out and moving across anything that doesn't move fast enough to avoid getting wet, including her brother or sister's butt. She's the mothering type and grooms everyone and everything.

Baron is a big fat baby. He loves to be the center of attention. He doesn't bark, he woo-woos until you think he's going to have an anyerism. He's the priss of the family and prnaces all over the place. He's been shown and he knows it.

My neice came to visit at Christmas and asked if they were "circus dogs" because all they do is jump over each other.

Re: quirks and behaviors

thank you all for humoring me and replying. Had I opened my eyes and actually looked at the top of this page, there's a big old thread up there about boxer traits. I could've just added my .02 there.

Oh well, the mods seemed not mind, thank you. So lets hear more...

Re: quirks and behaviors

Sadie is not extremely vocal but she will get to whining if she feels ignored or wants a treat while we are eating and she does play with daddy every night. She will crouch real low and then jump up and actually bark at him. Very cute! They will carry on for 30 minutes or so. When we first got her she was very timid and did not make a sound ever. It took her well over a 1 1/2 years to get to this point. She is such a lover and snuggler. I don't really know why she was so timid when we got her. I'm just glad she has grown out of it. She was terrified of men when we first got her but like I said she plays with daddy every night now!
She does not like water at all and does not enjoy baths. She will suffer through, but is very put out afterwards! She loves riding in the car though and will want to sit in my daughter's booster seat! Cracks me up. She will jump in and sit in that seat like a person! I just love her to pieces!

Re: quirks and behaviors

Mia doesn't whine, she either barks or woo woo's. She isn't too vocal in that she barks all the time, the chihuahua will bark if he hears a pin drop.

The vacuum is not her favorite thing. Tail puffs out, kicking her hind legs out like a bull, ready to kill it (I wanna get the Roomba just for fun). There is a definite affliction for blankets. First thing she does when she comes in in the morning.....look for Taz and drag her blanket out of her house. The christmas tree skirt was rather amusing (whole tree came down on her and ever since if her ball rolls anywhere near the tree, she won't get it )

Mia's favorite toy is a simple tennis ball. She plays games with herself. Running up the stairs to the top and then dropping the ball down the stairs and chasing it. When she first started doing it my wife thought I was throwing her ball up there (wife was in our bedroom watching T.V.). She was getting rather annoyed because Mia running up and down the stairs sounds like a freight train. To this day she does this every night.

Re: quirks and behaviors

Both of mine are pretty vocal. Lola didn't used to make a sound then one day she fence barked and that was it, she's our watch dog now. Zeb doesn't fence bark but barks when he's excited or if you're telling him off he'll answer you back. He also howled the other night when he was excited

They both love baths too, Zeb even gets comfy and will lay down, Lola sits there like lady muck but they both hate the hairdryer so we don't bother using it (our other dog loved it)

Lola has to have something in her mouth, I swear if I got her a dummy (pacifier, sp?) she'd gladly use it.
