Ugh, sad and angry all at once

Whether or not my Bella's breeder was a backyard breeder, I loved her (I would absolutely NEVER buy from her again, but she honestly is the SWEETEST woman ever). When we got Bella she came with giftbags "ITS A GIRL" everything, photo albums of her "earlier days", pictures of her parents, just... no health testing or show dogs! LOVED dogs, but that's about it. Well, I recently sent her some pictures of Bella and she replied today.
When we had gotten Bella, the breeders family was going away to Alaska, and apparently while they went away, they boarded Sarah (Bella's mom) at the vet. In the e-mail it said that Sarah had passed away while at the vet, because they apparenlty left her choke collar on, and she pretty much hung herself in the kennel. I feel bad, like I should be consoling Bella for losing her mommy (she was only like 3 or 4!!), but then the angry part...
She informed me that if we ever do breed Bella she would gladly purchase a puppy. I don't want to say anything to her because she's such a nice old woman, who VERY OBVIOUSLY just doesn't know any better, and I don't want to be throwing it in her face shes "not a good breeder", but I really want to say "I WILL NEVER BREED HER!! And you really shouldn't have bred her parents!!!"
I think I will right back to her and tell her about Boxerworld and how much I love it, and maybe she'll join and read and learn herself.
Sorry just had to vent. I'm going to go give Bella an extra milkbone tonight!

Oh might I add about how good intentioned this woman is, we bought Bella with a contract stating that if they were to find out that we were "tying our dog out" as its primary residence, they had the right to come take her back with no refund, and a "If the puppy gets sick, or you can no longer keep her" deal, AND "if the puppy gets sick and you decide to keep her" part where they would pay for the medical bills ect (so long as it wasn't our fault). I just feel terrible because this woman truely is trying. Oh well, I sent her the Boxerworld site, and maybe she'll read up and help herself. I hope she does!!

I would console her and introduce her to BW. Sounds like she is trying to do the right things, maybe just doesn't know any better. As far as selling her a puppy you can always say you "don't have any current plans to breed" and leave it at that.

I agree w/ Tracey. A simple 'we have no plans to breed' should be enough.

Hopefully she will join.
Sounds like her intentions are good.
I think you did the right thing

Oh that is such a sad story. I agree, she sounds like her heart is in the right place. Maybe you should tell he you have decided to spay her to protect her future health. And then introduce her to BW so she can find the info on responsible breeding herself.

I can't believe how so many people are miss informed about breeding still and I was one of them. I know 2 people right now that have boxers and will be breeding them since they have never been on bw they don't know how wrong it is. but I know I would never get a boxer from them. one is breeding a dog she goe from the humane society to a boxer from a pet store. one of them has agression issues and the other at 3 is so hyper could you imagine those pups.

Both mine come from reputable breeders

Its our duty as boxer lovers to educate as many people as we can.

Yeah, I would definetly refer her to BW because once she joined here, if she didn't know it before, she definitly will NOW! LOL

So sorry to hear about the loss though. It's truly a shame...

At this point, I think a nice sympathy card from you, and perhaps one from Bella would be a great thing, perhaps a copy of the "Rainbow Bridge" poem.

If you talk to her again and she mentions that she wants a pup from bella, just politely say that you opted to spay her due to the increased health issues with intact females, and thank her for her interest. She may be asking you as a way to get a "piece" of her female back, something that is in a way connected with the girl she lost.

If you are close enough with her, you might go through the pictures she sent you of bella, see if there is one with bella and mommy, then get a nice frame, frame the picture and send it to from "Bella",

Thursday (the one day the boyfriend and I both will be around), we're going to pick up a nice card, and print some pictures of Bella and put them in there. I don't really have any pictures of her mom & her, well I do, but they were printed into the book she gave us when we got her!
I was thinking the same thing about her wanting a piece of her dog, which is why I didn't give her the speech of what I've learned on BoxerWorld, but I did tell her about this place in a manner such as "This site is great!".
I just keep hoping she e-mails back and says "WOW! I never knew that you're supposed to do all that before breeding!"
::sighs:: She's such a nice lady too!
I'll dig out the book an look for a good picture of her and mom tonight!
