POOR POOR CARSON! I am such a BAD mommy

Ok, I feel like poo!! I am such a bad mommy! How did I not notice all of this??!!

I took Carsy in to the vets today for two reasons. Firstly, on Friday night at last potty time..he came in, seemed fine but then I noticed him limping really bad. I checked all his paws for cuts, puncture wounds, swelling..anything, but nothing. I got no response when I pushed, pulled and prodded his legs and feet. Friday night at bedtime, he had a real hard time getting up the stairs. Saturday he did nothing but lay at my feet on his bed and sleep. When he was awake, he looked pitiful. I had to coax him outside..he was limping but not as badly as Friday night. He didn't really eat much..and did not play at all. Yesterday, status quo, no better no worse, figured he might have just strained a muscle. He didn't eat much or drink. I got him to eat a popsicle. I gave him some aspirin (ok'd by vet). Had to carry him upstairs last night. I planned on calling the vet back and make an appointment for today.

This morning he bounced out of the crate, ran down the steps, did a few burns, pee'd but no poo, came in and inhaled his food and drank. At 10am (right when I was going to grab him to head to the appointment) he vomited up a HUGE amount of food..way more than what I fed him today! And in it, I saw the aspirin..whole..could still read the words on the tablet! Then thought about it and while doing poop patrol in the yard yesterday I noticed that HIS poo seemed to have fuzz in it..I knw it was his because his is always in the same place, Echo's is in another. Got a bit scared..vomiting up food that SHOULD be digested, vomiting up an undigested pill from almost 24 hrs before..not pooping...I'm thinking intestinal blockage!!

Ok, so forgot to mention that off and on for the last 3 wks or so, Carsy has had pudding like, stomach churning stinky poo. When if first happened he was just starting to teeth so I figured it was that..then the next week i had given them a different food..so I thought THAT was why for that week..the next week it was really hot and humid..thinking ok thats why for that week..then thought he might have giardia since he'd been drinking from puddles and such...sooo..

Here's what's up w/poor Carson

1) He hurt his knee pretty badly. Doc gave him a shot and said he should be 100% better tomorrow. If he's not putting 100% weight on it tomorrow, he goes back in. They gave him Rimadyl. He get that for a week.

2) He was a bit dehydrated (I did pull on the skin it did bounce back right away yesterday..but today not so much) so they pumped him up with subq fluids. (freaky looking with this giggly, wiggly lump on his neck..looks like a breast implant gone wrong )

3) He has COCCIDIA...again (he had it as a young pup)! How he could get it and not both is odd if its in my yard..they both have access to the same places..he's not a pop eater and I don't recall being around any other dogs in the last month or so..then again it could be a stray visiting my yard that I haven't seen..anyway..he's on Albon for that..Echo is also getting it just in case..she tends to eat his vomit...so I can't see his poo being not to her liking

4) He has a possible obstruction! Doc said stuffing/fuzz won't always show up on an XRay..she seems to think its possible he has a small amount that is somewhat "free flowing" and it isn't blocking anything but once in a while..it does block up..will keep an eye on him closely..but since he's passing poo..on a regular basis and it does have fuzzys in it its moving down..

Oh and he won't be neutered on Thursday like scheduled....
He's taking Albon, Rimadyl, Over the counter Pepcid or Zantac for the vomiting etc. (given a shot of antinasua med at the vets) bland diet and I have to restrict his activity..ya! sure. He came tearing into the house like the devil was chasing him..I told the vet to rx some doggie Valium for both carson AND echo..since I'd have to keep of them restricted in activity in order to keep him restricted

So, i feel like a really really really bad momma! I let it go but in my defense, his poos did firm up and then they'd get runny..I would have never let him go 3-4 wks w/diahrea (which it wasn't diahrea..it was just pudding like in texture) but I still feel bad.

Oh and my little man now weighs in at 35 pounds. I think he should have been a bit closer to 40 but w/all his ails in the last month, I think he lost some..his collar is a bit looser than normal

Don't beat yourself up. It's hard to monitor their behavior and such when at times it can be very erratic. Fine one minute, not the next, etc.

The important thing is he is now getting the care and treatment he needs.

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too.

You are not a bad Mom. A bad Mom would not take him to the vet and get meds. Or give those meds to him. You are doing good and I am sure he loves you so much. Let us know how he is doing.

Oh! Poor baby Carson! And poor Donna too! Don't beat yourself up. It's so hard to tell sometimes if there's really anything wrong or if they're just having and "off" day. You're on the right track now though and he'll be better in a jiffy. Did you ask the vet if she could prescribe some valium for you!!!

Been there; done that! My skin kids are grown now; my youngest is 17 and is a pretty good, quiet kid. When they were all younger and we had two cats, three dogs, some 15 ducks, a turkey & a lame chicken, it was usually chaotic. But trust me, it does get better!

I had to laugh when you described the sub-Q fluids looking like breast implants gone wrong. Rocky had to get those back in February when he was bitten by a spider. See: http://flickr.com/photos/pissyrissy/...n/set-1003892/

Don't feel bad about what's happened. Sometimes it's hard to tell when things are just everyday and when they are something more serious. Especially if your dog has bowel issues already.
