neutering question
I'm not to sure where I would ask this but here seemed like the best place. While I was talking with the vet a week ago at my boys check up and shots; he had ask me when I planned on getting Kai neutered and I had always thought at 6months old was the time you get it done; but then vet had said to me I could wait a little longer cause it would I guess better the chance of him developing a larger chest and head and something about his adult body muscle. I just wanted to know if doing so by waiting had and truth to as what he had said?
And also at what age do you all get your boys fixed?

There is definitely some truth to that. It would be better for his development to have him neutered later, around 1 year old. It has been recommended for so long to have young dogs spayed/neutered at 6 months because that is around the time they become sexually mature, and therefore it is the best time to do it in order to avoid unwanted litters. As long as you do not leave your dog outside unsupervised, and you have no intact females in the house, it would be better for his health and development to neuter him when he's a bit older.

Thanks for the great info. I'm in the same boat with two male pups that will eventually be neutered. It's nice to be well informed about these things, especially since some vet clinics really push the whole "neuter at 6 months for best results" philosophy.

Thanks for the help and info. I will wait then to have him fixed a little later then for his health and development . I don't plan on studding my guy even though he's a gorgeous little man and iv been asked if I plan on using him as a stud dog when he's older and I don't thinks so. or having any whoops litters. He won't be around any intact females or left unattended for to long in the yard on his own as far as I can fore see right now =D!
Thank you again Caney Creek and ur girls are beautiful by the way!

I was going to wait until Buster was a year for the reasons mentioned, but he started lifting his leg a little so I had him done at 8 months. I was afraid he would start marking and I just wasn't going to deal with that. Not saying that he would have, because not all dogs do that, I just didn't want to take a chance. I would wait until he was a year if possible.

I was caught in a squeeze because the rescue required Oscar be neutered by 6 months, but our vet would not perform the surgery until he was at least 6 months. We agreed to have it done just after he turned 6 months. He started lifting his leg at 9 months and at 4 years he is still lifting his leg most of the time. He does the stretch the rest of the time.

Thanks guys. My vet had also mention the leg lifting and marking to he said it may or may not stop the behavior after he was fixed if he started it. I have witness a few males that were fixed and they still marked like crazy anyway; I don't want my boy to be a marker but sometimes I guess u can't help it. Thanks again for the help I will wait till he's a year if possible or at least close to it

My vet's office pushes for 4 months, personally I waited until 6 and have been happy with my decision (my boy is now a little over 2 years).

Hey thanks for the info. I have a 6 month old boy and have been thinking about the whole neuter thing, but I had no idea that it would affect his development, good to know. I think I will wait until he is a year old.

I wouldn't say "would" because my boy was neutered at 6 months and he developed just fine and is a very healthy 67 pounds at 2 years old.
