There's really no such thing as a "normal" weight for boxers. They are all over the place as far as size goes. Also, boxer puppies can grow and develop at different rates; it varies from one pup to the next. Your guy might just be a "late bloomer"

To determine whether he's a good weight for his frame, you look at his physique. You should be able to see the last few ribs when the dog is standing normally -- that's for adult boxers. In boxers younger than 2 years, more than a few ribs will likely be visible. If the spine and hip bones are obvious however, then the dog is too thin.

Your boy is in the lanky stage right now As long as he's not TOO skinny and his energy level is good, you have nothing to worry about.

Just wait! Boxer puppies can be very thin and lanky and grow up to be 85 lb beefy adults. If you know the parents, their size can give you an close estimation of your boys potential. But that can be meaningless as well. LOL

The best description of a growing boxer I have read is:

Boxers grow tall the first year, grow out the second and then grow their brains the third. I really love that saying!

Hang in there. He may just be everything you had hoped for in size, but if not, he will definitely make up for it in personality!

Mine are small too, but they look relatively healthy. Millie is now almost 11mos old (next Friday) and she is 42lbs -- she will probably stay smaller just because of her kidney disease, but Ozzy is 9 almost 10 mos old and he only weight 57lbs. I wondered the same thing you did whether they were "too" skinny, but I guess they are just so active, especailly since I have 2 of them, that they burn it off quickly.

I am definitely interested/curious to see how big they will get to be.

57lb for a 9-10 month old boxer doesn't seem particularly small. Bear in mind that an adult (that is, 2-3 year old) male boxer is likely to weigh around 65-70lb - if he is correctly sized. You can't expect an adolescent to have anything like the muscle tone of an adult, and at 9-10 months he's a long way from finishing growing even skeletally. Without having any idea of his height, your 57lb dog sounds every bit as though he's going to be a correct, not small, boxer

newboxerpup: your pup may be a bit smaller than some others of his age, but (like people) dogs can grow at very different rates. An 8 month old pup is 4-6 months away from even finishing growing in height, let alone filling out and gaining his adult muscle mass. As long as he is bright and healthy, I really wouldn't worry but instead just sit back and let nature take its course. By about the 12-14 month mark, you'll have a better idea of what his adult frame is going to be like (though you'll still have to wait a further 1-2 years to see the finished product).

Haha oh boy...does that mean he is likely to be a big boy? Or is this average for the age? His chest is rather large and I always wondered if he would grow into it. I can measure his height later when I get home. Would I measure floor to top of head or top of haunches?

Ha this seems to be a interesting topic for those who have never owned boxers before, my boy is 18wks and i'd swear he is part greyhound. They must go thru more growth stages than i have seen before cause even their heads seem to look small compared to what they finish up looking like.
