I personally have only read the dog listeneer by Jan Fennel. Its an excellent book that tells you how to correct bad behaviour the dog may have or may be starting to have.

Out of the two I've only read The Dog Listener, and I thought it was excellent! I've actually read it a couple of times. It's helped out a great deal in taking control of my pups and knowing how to work with them.
You're going about it the right way, get the book, then the pup! I did the same thing. I wanted to make sure I at least go through the book once before Tyson came home. After I got him I went back through the book to refresh.
I've also read The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson, which was another good book.

I'm not sure you'll find anyone who would recommend the 'Whisperer' Book over Jan Fennell's The Dog Listener, LOL.

I would, actually. Assuming, of course, that the 'Whisperer' book is the one by Paul Owens, published long before the 'other guy' came out with his TV show.

LOL, how rude of me to assume it was the Cesar Milan book!

I loved the Dog Listener. It really helped in so many ways with our rescue boy. In addition, it has great advice on puppy hood. The newest Dog Listener book has both of Jan Fennel books combined into one.

Is the Dog Whisperer (Caesar Milan) not really a great idea to follow? I have one of his DVDs and really enjoyed it but also looking for other opinions...

There are several threads about Cesar Milan that go into detail about his methods; in a nutshell, while there is some good information (such as his helping people see that dogs are not little children in fur coats), he uses some methods which are not compatible with the Boxerworld philosophy (leash corrections, primarily). Like most things, you take what works and leave the rest. For my money, I'd go with Pat Miller, Patricia McConnell, Karen Pryor, Jean Donaldson, Deb Jones, Suzanne Clothier, etc.

Right Lola has some training issues so I've just ordered The Dog Listener from Amazon, hope it's as good as people say it is
