Hi Lola's Mum,
How about "Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson. I also like "The Other End of the Leash" by Patricia McConnell
Both books are great. Good luck

I would also recommend "Don't shoot the dog" by Karen Pryor and "Bones would rain from the sky" by Suzanne Clothier

Also "Clicking With Your Dog" by Peggy Tillman, "Click for Joy!" by Melissa Alexander, and "The Power of Positive Dog Training" by Pat Miller. These are more specific to training vs. relationship/theory.

Cesear Milan
I have seen his show on t.v.
I think he is really great!
but not all people have to train their dogs that way, I think the only people that really have to do that are the ones dealing with the dominence role in their dogs then it is seriouse and (nesissary? spelling?) but for those dogs who automatically take on the submissive role. don't really need the Dog whisperer method. but you have to always watch out for those little signs of being dominated aggressive or not - just little ways of minipulating you. Sneeky little buggers.
Good luck with finding the right book.

Louie's Mom, just to clarify (because it is confusing) - the *book* "The Dog Whisperer" is in no way related to the TV program of the same name. The book was written about 5 or 7 years before the program first aired, and he author of the book in no way endorses the methods used on the TV program.

As I am a firm advocate for Jan Fennells' books, I'm shouting inside to see so many people have read them. They do work--my Zak is living proof of that. I still need to get the Practical Dog Listener and am waiting for it to become free at our Library. Since I have found this method works, I refuse to read other books which might confuse the issue and myself.

I find that sad. How will you ever grow if you don't read other books and see what other views are out there? What happens when Jan's tricks *don't* work? You'll have nowhere to go, because you've limited yourself to only one point of view.
I think the best we can do, for ourselves and our dogs, is read as much as possible, take from each author what works and discard the rest. I don't agree 100% with anything I've read so far - nor do I think I should, because these authors have never met me or my dogs - but by getting a wide range of ideas I've been able to develop a system that works for us. It is constantly in flux, of course, as I learn and progress and my dogs do, too, but that's how I think it should be.

So I am 1/2 through the dog whisper... I did not even realize there is also a dog listener. I will get this book next. I would love to here more opinions on the books and what types of approaches they each take. I have to say with one day of practicing the dog whispers approach Bradlee already "listens and responds" better. I really like his idea of giving your dog a "Job."

The Dog Listener by Jan Fennell was the first book I read. It was easy to read. I have also read other books (Culture Clash, The Other End Of The Leash, currently reading Don't Shoot The Dog) which I found provided even more information.
I have got a few more books to go through, and I personally think it is a good idea to read a lot of books as each author has a different style of writing as well as different advice which provide the reader with a lot of valuable information. All this knowledge will no doubt come in handy one day.
