HELP..He's eating the couch

Rock has decided that his favorite chew toy is my couch. He has already ripped one cushion so bad that it had to be turned over never to be be turned again. Then I had a blanket across the back for decoration only and the other day I caught him throwing the blanket off and tearing into the back of the couch. There are now several air holes where there aren't any needed. Needless to say the blanket is not only for decoration anymore!! It's not like he is short of toys, He has a big toy box under the aquarium that he pretty much keeps emptied all over the floor. He has his favorite cow that he drags around everywhere. I don't know why at this age (16 months) that he is chewing furniture worse than he did as a puppy. Anyone out there that is or was going through the same thing?

Have you tried using the Bitter Apple Spray? We used it on our rug and it worked well. Cheap too, only like 5 bucks.

I've never even heard of it....where do I find it. I live in Small Town USA so if it's at Pet Co I'm gonna have to travel an hour. I'd do it though just to keep my couch in one piece. I can't afford to buy a new one as long as he's eating them.

You can get it at Walmart. They have it on their web site.

Couch Eater

I am having the same issue with Buster. I have tried the "Bitter Apple" spray and he seemed to like it. Actually licked it off the couch and (arms of the chairs) and then preceeded to rip the arms of the couch and chairs down to the wood. He has just turned a year a few days ago. I can't afford to keep buying furniture if he's going to keep ripping them to the wood frames.

Any other suggestions besides the "Bitter Apple"?

Thanks - Hana

Now Rock quit driving your mom crazy. I think i would die if Harlie ripped into my couch. Definetly try bitter apple, it worked on my fake plants that she kept getting into. Make sure it wont ruin the material. Good luck

Talking

Buster's Mom-

I know it's not a funny situation and I feel really bad for you, but the way you described it, how he actually LICKED the bitter apple spray off the couch, then ripped it to bits...I was in hysterics.

Im trying to think of any other ideas, but Im drawing a blank right now. Maybe try spraying vinegar?

Hana--I am so glad that I am not alone in this. I know it is a terrible thing but I have to laugh at the way you described your situation. I can totally see Buster and Rock at opposite ends of the same couch going to town. They sound alot alike. Rock will eat anything...bitter, sweet, hot or cold. He actually eats onions and tomatos if he can get my hubby to give it to him. Anyway as you hear of solutions let me know and I will do the same. MeganMK--Would not the vinegar smell? It might work because it is a foul taste but I worry about an odor.

Thanks ya'll--Jenn

Rock is eating it while we are at home. I actually watched him throw off the blanket and pull out a mouth full of stuffing. When we are not home he eats paper towels.

Buster eats the couch and chairs while we are home. I caught him just the other night knawing on the now exposed wood framing to the chairs. Of course Buster will eat anything...paper towels, toilet paper, cottan swabs, my son's skateboards. For some reason he has a extreme liking to paper and wood. I had to take away a pencil from him just an hour ago. He will tear it to tiny pieces and its not easy getting the pieces of pencil out of the carpet.

I am hoping that the chewing will go away so! He has treats and babies so it's not like he doesn't have things to chew on.

He's just so darn cute it's hard to get mad at him and I'm sure he's a human because he knows I won't stay mad long!

I had NO idea about the onion thing. I will definitely keep that in mind. He has only eaten onion a couple of times but he definitely WON'T be eating it anymore. But by toxic do you mean that they could kill him? Just curious...not that it matters because the matter has been decided. I will try the hot sauce and the vinegar on the furniture. Thanks for the heads up
