Fear Aggressive Boxer and New Dog
This is a happy ending. This may be a long story so please bear with me. As many of you may know I have a fear aggressive boxer named Buster. Well, I had taken on a new dog about 5 months old, he is a mixed breed dog Oscar, that was about to be taken to a local shelter. At first I never thought this would work given the fact Buster is a FIGHTER when he becomes afraid (he does not FLIGHT like some dogs). We kept the dogs separated except for about 1 hour a day for the first 2 days! We kept both dogs on leashes and just let them interact with us but not really with each other. By the third day, they were both interacting with each other (smelling, pawing and licking) but still on leashes and only for a minimal amount of time. By the fourth day, Buster began to trust Oscar and they began romping- still on leashes and for only a minimal amount of time. Here we are 11 days past their first meet and they are playing , not on leashes and have open access to one another. This just proves fear aggression is an emotional problem and very different from regular dog aggression. Before this Buster would bark at any strange object, person, thing that past his sight. The two of them play as if they were litter mates and been together since birth. We entered this situation with patience and eased the two dogs together- did not force them and let Buster feel safe and understand Oscar would not hurt him. A kind of funny thing since Oscar is still a puppy he wants to eat all of the time- he will take treats from Busters mouth. And the funny part is that this dog that hated everyone because of his fear is now letting a puppy he has only known for 11 days take food from his mouth! I think this is wonderful- I am so excited this happened and wanted to share my story with anyone that has a fear aggressive boxer!
