We've been leaving our 5 month old puppy alone in the house for a couple months! We put a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs so he can only be in the basement. He has a doggy door into a pen inside the garage, his pen has a doggy door that goes outside into a kennel with a doghouse. He's alone at the most 4 - 5 hours. We have been extremely lucky, he hasn't destroyed anything. We just had the problem of him bringing his poop inside and eating it (YUCK!). He hasn't done this for the last couple days Our house is brand new and we were worried he might be destructive, but so far he hasn't been.

Sounds like you have a pretty good setup for him. Be careful though... he's going to try his hand at knocking that baby gate down before you know it.

At the rate he is growing this wouldn't surprise me!! My husband is pretty creative and handy, he'll spend hours building things for his puppy . It's amazing how fast they steal your heart!

Our boxer was 1 1/2 - 2 years old before we let her have the run of the house. I started out with 1/2 day in the crate and I was able to come home at lunch and leave her out in the afternoon. When I felt should could be trusted and didn't destory the house she was left out the entire day. I guess every dog is different. It depends on their personalities too. I was real glad to put the crate away, it was great for puppy training but I always felt real guilty about putting her in there.

1 in, 1 out

I only had one crate in Oct. when we brought Cassie home. Tommy was 13 months at the time. He's been out during the day ever since. I'm very thorough in the morning before I leave to make sure the bedroom and bathroom doors are shut and that everything he likes to chew is put up. Like paper or pens or remotes. Then, I take his toy basket, and dump it all over the living room. He only has free roam of the living room and kitchen. But he's always been a good boy. Cassie stays in her crate, and will for a long time, the cat has to have some sanity during the day, and I fear she would never let up on him.
This only works during the day while we are at work, mind you. He KNOWS the difference! lol If we come home, then leave again after a short while, that's when he will counter/table surf for whatever trouble he can find.
Both run laps around the yard for about an hour before we leave in the morning to tucker them out for the day.
