Drinking urine!!!

Our Duke (6 mos.) has recently decided that he likes to drink our son's urine! 3.5 y/o dear son went in his potty, I walked him to the bedroom and the potty lid was left up. Next thing I hear, Duke the doofus is drinking the pee out of the potty!!!

Has anyone else had anything like this happen? Is it jealousy of me spending time with son and not him?

We are careful to keep Duke safe and out of trouble, but this I did not expect!

He's going to the vet on Monday, so I'll ask what it's all about, I'm just wondering if our Duke is really just that weird.

P.S. - He also eats the cat litter, but that's a whole other matter.

It's probably just that the lid was left open. I've found that, if given the opportunity, dogs (not just boxers) will eat or drink something that we consider "gross". To them, the toilet has water in it, hence...drink! Cat litter smells interesting, and they don't investigate things the same way we do. They use their mouths, even though we may think it's disgusting.

Your best bet is to eliminate the temptation. Teach your son to close the lid or the bathroom door, and your dog won't drink from the toilet. Of course, make sure he has plenty of fresh water available.

Also, as far as the cat litter: my dog finds cat litter everywhere--inside, outside, and in between, and as soon as she finds it, it's in her mouth. Again, eliminate the temptation. Get a covered cat litter box, or put it somewhere the cat can get to it but the dog can't. I'm sure the cats would appreciate the dog no longer rooting around in their personal space!

Best of luck!

I've caught my 1 year old boxer Dori drinking urine as well. If an animal pees in front of her at the dog park, she'll run over to lap up what she can (gross I know!) Dori also enjoys drinking out of unflushed toilets...the only was to stop it is to not give her the opportunity. Dogs eat gross things, there isn't much we can do about it. I can't even tell you how many disgusting stagnant puddles Dori has drank out of at the dog park! It's just part of doggie life! Just make sure you don't let your pup give you big kisses afterwards!
