2year old male - poops and pees in house daily - help

Rex was one when we adopted him. Initially he has occational accidents and then for a short while nothing. He is now 2 years old and for some time now he goes in the house almost daily. He is confined to the kitchen and sunroom with our other boxer a four year old female. We are gone from the house nearly 10 hours a day and are have a problem thinking that crating him for that time is in any way a good thing. We have had him to the vet and did find some urinary problems that have since been corrected without affect. We have adjusted his morning feeding and initially that seemed to help but not any longer. We go out in the morning with him and when he does go he gets praise and a treat but lately because it is cold and dark he doesn't care to go outside in the morning. We will never give up on Rex but frustration levels are running high, cleaning up poop and pee every single day after arriving home is getting really old. Even hiring a pet sitter to stop by this week mid day hasn't helped. HELP please.

Pete

I have 3 options.

1 is you might have to crate him and have the petsitter come in the middle of the day to let him out. And try having them not put him back in his crate so basicly, he would just be crated in the mornings.

2 is you might try changing his diet. Some dog foods will help with them eliminating less often.

3 would you be willing to paper train him like a lot of people do with little dogs? You might have to own the newspaper company though. lol.

Don't know if this might help you or not. I understand not wanting to come home to smelly doggy doo when you come hone from a long day at work.

Best of luck!

I agree with the pet sitter thing. When Nick was still a pup we had a pet sitter come every day for his noon feeding and a potty break same thing we were both working 10 hour days. That being said I can't imagine holding my bladder for 10 hours I feel it is asking alot of our dogs to do that. If you can't find a pet sitter or dog walker sometimes a neighbor, friend, or relative may be able to help out. But repay them by buying dinner or tickets to the movies or wash their windows anything to show your appreation. If you know any college students who need a little extra cash that can be a less expensive option to the dog sitter. Best of luck.

And all dogs are different. My male could have held it forever if he had to but my girl now is only good for a few hours. Ten hours is a long, long time. Silly question but do you have a light out back where you let him out? My girl will stand at the door and wait for me to put the backyard light on Good luck

Rex does not go in the house when we are home on the weekends. But obviously he is let outside more frequently. He has actually barked & whinned when we are in another part of the house and he needs to go so now that I think about it, he seems to know he is to go outside. As for the light thing....no there is no outside lighting and we are rural and it can be quite dark out in the yard. He really doesn't seem to care for the dark, especially in the am. Maybe an outdoor light may be helpful. Thanks to all for the input. We do believe that "this too will pass" but the question some days is how long will it take. Our female, Reina was 2 years old before she completly got it.

Actually, it might not. Sorry to be discouraging, but the average *maximum* amount of time that most dogs are capable of holding their bladder/bowels is 8 hours. You may simply be asking for more that the dog is physically capable of handling. This, and the adverse health impacts of having to retain toxins inside the body for such unnaturally long periods (the body is designed to expel toxins, in urine especially, every 2-3 hours), are the main reasons why 8 hours is the maximum amount of time that dogs should be regularly asked to hold on.

Of course, that is rather inconvenient. But I would very much suggest that you should look into possible alternatives. If not a walker (even neighbourhood kid) who could come midway through the day to let the dogs out for a potty stop, you could consider things like daycare, doggy doors, or just providing newspaper for him to eliminate on (at least it would make clean-up easier).

Gee poor Rex. 10 hours is a long time to not use the bathroom. You could try the old newspaper routine, also piddle pads. The sitter is an excellent idea too. I just can't imagine not going for 10 hr at a time. I wish you good luck whatever you decide.

Are you certain that it is Rex? Could it possibly be your other boxer or even both of them, considering they are confined inside for 10 hours?

I have to agree with the others. 10 hours is just too long - can you get someone in to take them out for a toilet break and play?
