sigh... still peeing and pooing in random places (kinda long..)

so jasper is still randomly peeing and pooing in random places... anytime we take him out of the crate we'll take him directly outside to the spot we want him to pee or poo and wait till he does and then congratulate him. will also do this as soon as he is done eating although after eating it is hit or miss as far as whether he'll go or not... what is PISSING me off is that yesterday i took him to my dads, let him outside, he peed, then came inside and decided to take a dump in his weight room!! i caught him just as he was crouching and he stared at me while i yelled running at him!! didn't attemp to stop, didn't do anything other than continuing his business. on top of that, while i was with him in the backyard he just decided to pee on the concrete!! grr... what am i doing wrong?? i realize he is barely four months old but do i need to keep him on a leash in the area that i want him to go until he does it?? will he grow out of it?? my problem is i can never tell if he is done or not because there have been times that i take him outside, he poo's and five minutes after i bring him back in he'll randomly go to the restroom again.

sigh... sorry so long, i am just kinda at my wits end as to what to do... he is a great dog but i hate having to keep an eye on him ALL the time because i'm afraid he'll go somewhere

the only other thing i can think of is building a dog run so when i can't be right next to him he is forced to go in one place... just seems like a waste when he isn't going to spend that much time in it

(and he doesn't usually make a mess in the same place and i do clean up his messes as soon as he makes them so he can't smell them)

Cool

We went through the same thing though and our girl is 5 months old.

First of all.. be grateful he went on the concrete outside... at least it was outside! He is still a puppy and is still learning I'm sure if he is barely 4 months. What really helped us is going back to the basics and taking her out after every feeding, play time, nap, etc. and especially after feeding keeping her on the leash until she goes #2!. We realized we had become relaxed about it thinking she was 'grown up' but it was too soon.

After goin back to basics, we introduced 'Poochie Bells' to hang on our doorknob so that she can run over and ring the bells when she has to go outside. That has helped Tremendously!! While she's still not perfect... she will ring it to let us know when she has to go outside and we will take her on her leash to her 'potty area'. Sometimes she rings it and then goes right there on the floor... but hey she really tried and it might of snuck up on her... I'm sure she's still learning how to hold and control it and it might catch her off guard sometimes! But the poochie bells do open up communication as a way to let us know. We just took a trip across country and she would ring the poochie bells at the hotel too (still had accidents at night because our routines weren't the same). So after she has caught on to the poochie bells and you go to your dads, you can hang them on the door you will take your pup out of and make him ring the bells and take him outside immediately so he knows where they are!

It might be something for you to try... just keep at it, it takes a lot of work just like having a kid... he's still a young baby puppy and I'm sure he will catch on soon!

I agree with the above about going back to basics. I think you are expecting too much too soon out of a 4 month old pup. He's just not there yet, in fact most pups don't even get the whole hang of potty training until about the 6 month mark. And from what your saying it sounds like he really hasn't made the connection yet. Until then it's really up to your management and being commited to never giving him the chance to soil in the house. So if he's not trustworthy, don't let him roam free, restrict his access. If you have to tether him to you with the leash if you're moving about the house. Take more than frequent potty breaks and of course continue to praise him when he's successful outside. You might even want to up the ante and reserve one of his most favorite treats for a reward. Basically make going outside THE most rewarding place to go. He'll get it, you just have to be consistent.

Hope this helps.
