Jumping on everyone

My 4 year old Boxer will not quit jumping on people. He is fine around the family (husband & kids) but he jumps on everyone else. He even jumps on people he knows. I don't know what to do. Today he jumped on a 5 year old boy as he was walking in the front door. The result - a scratch and bruise on the childs head and a broken glass panel in my front door. It could have been worse but it is not acceptable. I'm really lost on what to do. This is a new problem. He used to run up the stairs 'afraid' everytime someone walked in the door. Now he is all over everyone. Any advice is greatly appreciated because at this rate I can't keep him. I have 3 children. They won't be able to ever have company if he won't quit. Please help!

Re: Jumping on everyone

I have a 4 year old boy who jumps, too!!!! If you do a search, you will find that you are not alone - there is a lot of information here that I found very helpful. Don't give up on your boy, he can be trained not to jump, but it will take work, consistency and a lot of patience to teach him that jumping is not acceptable. There is hope for both of our guys - hang in there with me!

Re: Jumping on everyone

I have found that the main problem comes when other people don't support your attempts to break this bad habit! We have tried everything to break Sasha from jumping but people think it's so "cute". I fail to see the cuteness in a 50 lb. dog jumping on my friends and little kids that come over! Some people have said to knee her in the chest when she jumps but I am not going to knee my dog! Lately I've got her back on the leash when I know people are coming. I have her sit next to me as people come in and she is only shown attention when she is sitting. Unfortunately this is taking forever to break but it is starting to work. good luck!

When people say they do not mind tell them you do -we went through this too and it took forever as folks would actually encourage the jumping by petting, etc. I also used to keep a short lead by the door and put it on before anyone came in-if I kept it right by the door I could usually get it on before anyone came in. Good luck
