Talking

Last winter we drove 22 hours to Florida. We took Bella, then 7 months old and our 2 toy rat terriers. We put the seats of our suv down and loaded the back up with those big fluffy beds. Our dogs slept almost the whole time. When we stopped for gas we would take them out for a potty break and I fed them in the car 1/2 hour before we stopped. We had no problems at all. We did leave at 4:00 AM and ended up in Florida at 2:00 AM the next night. We are planning the trip again this winter, but I told DH that I think I would like to stop for the night at a dog friendly hotel. Last year was such a marathon, I was exhausted for 2 days afterwards. The dogs had a blast in Florida by the way. Went to the doggie park twice a day and made loads of friends.

We travel alot with Lisa mainly to France which can take us at least 10 hours from door to door. According to the law here in Spain you are meant to stop every one and a half hours to rest (I am not 100% sure about this) so when ever we stop, she gets out does her business if she has too, runs a bit and we´re off again.
Lisa enjoys journeys and can´t wait to get in to the car.

Another good bonus is if we have a coffee and leave the car out of sight for any length of time we know we have a good alarm system, Lisa protects the car as if its her favourite bone or something.

The longest journey for our 2 has been about 12 hours. Usually we find that we are all pretty much in tune with each other. When we start to get fed up, stiff legs, hungry, toilet break required then the dogs will be feeling much the same too. So we stop about every couple of hours. They do seem to get thirsty in the car so make sure you take water with you.

I find for your sanity it is best to plan stops for the times of day that your pups are usually awake. The last time we took a road trip we left around 6pm. Exactly the time that mine are usually out of the crates and playing the hardest. Austin was so vocal the whole way there it about drove me nuts. On the way home we left around 1 pm. Time for his afternoon nap. It was much better!

We drove from the East coast to Colorado with Morrissey 4 years ago, he did really well, we stopped every couple of hours for a break, also he had his blanket and some of his toys.
Hopefully your baby will look out the window and enjoy the view as you are driving, ( and sleep!) good luck! Morrissey's mommy.
