I think you need to know the dog's motivation for what they are doing on the leash. Chloe is timid and therefore just wants to stay home - but she acts horribly without the exercise. We almost had to drag her while we were walking away from home - we used treats to get her to move forward (it's a lot better now).

Then she wants to pull us back home. So she pulls=stop and she has to sit BEHIND me. It tends to get worse as we get closer to home. When I start walking again I walk really slow - as soon as she steps in front of my stride - I give her a correction on the leash (standard flat leash)- if that doesn't work we sit again. So - I don't let her do what she wants until she does what I want.

I plan on 45 minutes for a walk - but she only walks about 15 minutes of the time. She is getting A LOT better after 5 weeks (age too I suppose) - we can sometimes do the whole thing in about 20 minutes once we get past her issues right when we leave and right when we get back.

The longe line method does take some time and space, but it works. It made Rowdy want to stay close and pay attention. Now I had to try the clicker solutions method because Rowdy began walking fine on a loose leash until a distraction appeared. This method is working on him not jerking my arm off in a new direction when there is a distraction present.

Something else to think about is getting a wider collar. I have heard my agility coach recommend this for several of the dogs in her beginner class, as you can hear them wheezing and choking because they are pulling so hard. I would hate to damage their throat even though they don’t seem to notice at the time. I used the GL with my 3 and if you are willing to us it forever it will do the trick. However after a couple months in agility class mine have really learned to stay with me unless I send them out. They are now better on the leash than any dog I have ever had. Good luck!
