Female marking with pee on walks

OK, I've never heard of females doing this before but Lily has started what seems to be marking during our walks. She backs up to poles, stop signs, bushes, and more to try and pee on them. It's quite funny watching her back up into stuff to do this. She peed the same pile of poop at least 3 times in a row. So I'm thinking this is a behavior that she probably shouldn't continue. So I've started mixing up our walks. Thankfully where we live, there are an uncountable different trails and neighborhoods we can venture through. As long as a walk is new to her, she doesn't do this excessive peeing but if we go back to one of her favorite trails, she starts marking things. Today she was backing up to yucca plants and standing over cactuses which couldn't have felt pleasent. Any thoughts or suggestions?

My Lily does this too Really the only time she squats now is at home. LOL on last nights walk she had both back legs on a power pole so she was doing a handstand and peeing She lifts her leg for plants, letter boxes, anything. Even for poop on the ground she will have one leg hovering off the ground. She started doing it after seeing dogs at the park do it. If it starts getting a bit excessive I tell her to cut it out and keep walking, but usually its not too bad

She just looks like a girl with identity issues

Oh mine is down right impressive. She can get her rump higher up than most males can lift their leg, at least 3 feet up. She has to sniff every tree and mark every other tree. She wasn't spayed until we adopted her from the shelter and looked to be a 3 yr old back yard breeder so I'm guessing that has a lot to do with this behavior in her case.

Lisa marks alot as well, even if its just a couple of drops. I think that she is letting the boys know that she is around.

Just last night we were in the backyard and Harlie pottied standing up. I dont know if this was marking or if it was her just being lazy. I was shocked when she did this. Another thing was that she walked a couple feet ahead and finished off. What do you think, laziness or marking?

Laziness.

Fiona did that last week, I had her on her leash and she spotted the neighbours kids so started pulling to go over there, I told her to go pee and she peed standing up. Looked at me like 'ok mom, now can i go'

Lily has done that too. I would say laziness Another funny pee that Lily has done was she saw a bunny she wanted to chase so she started pulling and I was holding her back which makes her stand up on her hind legs (she does this often so I suppose she gets a better look at the bunny). Anyways, she's standing upright on her two hind legs like a little person and I tell her to leave it and go potty so she just peed standing up on her two hind legs *sigh*

She finally lifted her leg

Well, with all of your stories, I figured her lifting her leg was right around the corner and yep, this morning she went up to a tree, started peeing and as she was doing so, lifted her hing leg as high as she could, supporting it with the tree. Silly girl. So now I have a female that lifts her leg to pee on trees and a male that squats.

Roxie stops at specific places along our normal route to squat and "mark"-I think that it is a dominance behavior, maybe. She appears to want to be the one in charge when it comes to other animals (and us too, sometimes).
