Smile New to the agility scene !!

Hi all,
I'm very interested in learning more about these agility courses/trials. I've had boxers for many years, and they're so smart, so agile and willing to learn I think this would be great fun. How does one start out? I see videos but it's always the border collies and those types of dogs so I never thought of my babies? I have tons of time and am looking for a hobby with my newest 5 month old boxer, he's very long and lean so that may be in his favor...RIGHT? Loving any advice I can get. THANKS , kori

Are there any clubs or training centers near you? Otherwise you could go to the AKC website and do search for any agility trails in your area. If you find one, got to it and observe and ask questions. Chances are it will be held at a facility that teaches agility and, if not, well, all those people have to train somewhere. Ask them where you can get started. Good luck in your search!

I second Gary's suggestions. If you can find a club or training facility, that is a great way to start.

Go to trials and watch. Find a place to sit near someone knowledgeable who is commenting to their companion about the runs, and listen.

You can start to get your dog ready to take agility classes. Work on really good sit and down stays, especially with distractions. Develop a really good recall, but you don't need (or want) a perfect sit in front of you. You want the dog to come running to you, and then you get out a tug toy and have a short tug party! You can also train your dog to touch a target, like a margarine tub top, or a yogurt carton top. This is helpful when you start training the dog to move away from you.

My mother is very activity with agility trials. She has three Shelties and is also now a judge. We are going to start working with Buster (this could be interesting) and I can't wait to see how it goes. I've never done it either, but I've watched her and it does look like it could be a lot of fun!
