Re: I need To Find A New Home For Fletcher
Hi Roma, Yes I've been getting the transfusions since December but my count continues to drop and the red cell counts are still in a worrisome range. Thats why the doctors feel that a transplant may be the next step. I have one doctor who wants to try radiation therapy as well. The theory there is that it can stimulate new cells to grow. None of these options are very appealing.

Re: I need To Find A New Home For Fletcher
Kristy-
I am so glad to hear you are keeping Flethcher.
I also wanted to let you know my heart goes out to you and your family! My grandmother was diagnosed with Myleodysplatic Syndrome about three years ago and she is going into the hospital this month for her second stem cell transplant (aka mini bone marrow because it is less chemo). I know how low platlete and red blood cells counts have affected her over time, she gets bi-weekly transfusion of platletes and weekly whole blood. My mom and I have had to really come together with her in order to keep the household running smoothly with 4 dogs and 6 cats.
Also, your comment about the National Bone Marrow Registry. I want you to know that my grandmother's brother was her first donor and the transplant did not take. This time she is using an unrelated donor, they found 20 9/10 matches for her in the registry and I was worried they wouldn't even find any that close.
If I can help you in any way, with questions or anything else, please let me know. I hate to think anyone else has to go through what we have gone through and bravely, my grandmother has opted to go through again (my mom and I are just there for the ride )
Many many hugs to you and your family!!!

Re: I need To Find A New Home For Fletcher
Kristly, I'm a bit behind in reading but still wanted to post. We are all behind you in recovering from this. It must be very difficult. Your husband sounds like an extremely wise and caring person. Good for you and him. Best of wishes.

Re: I need To Find A New Home For Fletcher
Thanks all for the kind words and thoughts I haven't been on much lately as I've just been really tired and not had much strength after treatments to do much more than sleep and throw up Plus Easter has always been our holiday to host dinner at our house (my husband is one of 8 children so it usually is a dinner for @40 people) and I refuse to give up doing the dinner and admitting defeat in the face of this illness - so I've been busy getting ready for that.
Update on Fletcher with the new dog walker. Not good. The first day the kid took him out, Fletcher had to pull rank and let the kid know who was in charge - he pulled a houdini and shirked out of his collar and took off. He was gone for 4 hours! I was hysterical when I opened my door expecting to see a worn out pup but instead was greeted by a horrified kid holding Fletcher's collar and leash. So now not only was he loose but he was tagless. I was petrified that he had somehow gotten the vibe I am sure I was sending out and feeling unwanted ran away. DH and I went street to street frantic until I began getting dizzy and was ordered home to the couch to wait. 4 hours or so later he came back and was covered in poop! I just cried with relief that he was ok and disgust that he acted so horribly again. DH took him in the basement and gave him a bath and I have resigned myself to the fact that if he is staying (which he is) then I am going to have to be the one to do all his walks. I have to find some way to do this , I just don't know how yet He obviously freaked out the neighbor kid who said that he just couldn't handle the responsibility of losing him again. I understand, I'm just scared about what this means. So I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again for all the support. You have no idea how much it means to me.

Re: I need To Find A New Home For Fletcher
Sorry it didn't work out with the dog walker, but keep looking - I am sure you can find a reliable walker with more experience of boxers. Maybe next time, they could accompany you on a few walks first, so Fletcher gets used to them, an you can establish the fact that the new walker will be the one in charge, and not Fletcher !
We are going on holiday in August, and Biff is staying with one of our friends. I worry that something like this could happen with Biff, so we are going to start introducing our dogsitter on walks over th next few months, and also visit her house with Biff, so hopefully they will bond. The girl was brought up with boxers, so I'm hoping she knows what she is letting herself in for
You are so brave having the family over for dinner - I hope it all goes smoothly and you have lots of helpers!!! Don't overdo it - and take care
(((Hugs)))
