Birthday cake question?

Mods if this is the wrong place to post this I'm sorry and feel free to move it as you wish to it's more appropriate place.
But my question is, I want to make a cake for the boys for their birthday on tuesday but I don't want to make a completely doggy one, like made of beef or liver or what not. I looked in the recipe forum and they mostly talk about those kinds of cakes. I wanna fix something me and hubby can share with them too. So my question...is it ok to fix a regular cake for them (like plain vanilla or yellow cake) and just not put any icing on it or get some kind of other toping for their part? I didn't know if they could have that kind of food. I mean it's only once a year, I think they disserve it for their b-day. I just want to know if the ingredients in say a Betty Crocker cake mix will hurt them? Sorry if my question is a bad one I just want my babies to have a yummy cake. Thanks!
