Maybe too much time outside?

I recently had some minor surgery. I live alone and I have Beau, a 9 week old male boxer, and I had to limit my time with him due to this surgery and to facilitate my recovery. Well, I'm better now but he spent 4 days with much more outside time than I would have liked to have given him and even one all nighter in the dog house (which he now loves).

He has a mentor, Pete, who is a 7 year old Boston Terrier and they get along great and Pete was with him the whole time. Of course I fed and watered and checked up on them several times a day.

Both are house dogs but of course Beau is just getting his training. His crate training was coming along well but now he loves it outdoors! I like him to have outside time and I generally play out with him for several hours a day outside but now he's hooked on mud, frogs and junebugs!

Now, I have him in his crate again on a regular overnight schedule and he yelps for outdoors like mad. I guess I will have to retrain him again.

Anyone else ever make a mistake like this? Any pointers?
