Jake is not too old to learn to be crated. His sofa destructions could be the result of separation anxiety and he may feel more secure in a crate. I would get him a extra large size crate and introduce him to it gradually. You may find that he doesn't mind it at all. It would certainly be a lot cheaper that having to repeatedly replace your sofa's.
