That's because in many states there are laws preventing selling/purchasing a pup before 8 weeks of age. In my opinion 6 weeks is too young to bring home a pup. They will learn alot by staying with their mom and littermates the extra two weeks.

That being said, regardless of the age of your pup when you bring it home, you should continue to feed the same food as it was getting before it came to you. Changing homes will cause your pup a fair amount of stress so you don't want to change things up too much. Unless they were doing something crazy like feeding it cat food or something, then continue to feed the same food for at least a week once it comes to your home.

Then once the pup has settled in a bit, you've gotten a feel for when and how it is pooping and peeing and you've had a chance to take it to the vet then you can think about changing. Pick a good quality, natural food and gradually transition over the course of a week to 10 days so you can tell if the pup is reacting well to the introduction of the new food.
