Gotta be a bit understanding of a 5 month old. I don't think she's doing it because she's an evil crazy dog. One night free with 2 pee spots isn't the end of the world. I'd probably have a chat with the gf about freaking out. That said you don't want to make a habbit of it. You definately want the dog to makes as few mistakes as possible and for us and our Cora that was crating for nearly 2 years. In fact when she was out and about we had the upstairs level gated off too.
You should probably get a stronger crate lol... maybe something bigger with a divider? The dog shouldn't be able to bust out of it. We always do a walk in the morning before work to have ours tired enough to want to rest at least for a bit of the day. That helped us. While we never had Cora bust out of a crate, she would sometimes try to pull something through the metal wiring of the crate that sort of thing. I'm sure a lot of people will recommend things such as kongs to keep them busy with something but we never did this ourselves. Not unless we were home.
Always try to prevent and focus on teaching the dog what they should do, instead of what they shouldn't. If that makes sense. Guide the dog towards desired behaviours by setting the dog up for success.
Clean up the spots/mess so that dog doesn't get used to them. We would either show Cora out or tell her 'no' (showing her what we were talking about) and figure out ways to prevent in the future.
Its not the end of the world and at 5 months and only 2 weeks with you you're most likely going to have a lot more 'fun' times ahead. They go through phases that sometimes aren't expected and don't make the most sense. Be patient and consistent and you will get a dog that you can trust to leave out. And when you do it'll be the biggest joy, and put a smile on your face every day.
