The spread of infection idea makes sense to me. I recently heard that some hospitals were stopping allowing dogs to visit patients because of the risk of the spread of MRSA. The idea is that a patient who is a carrier of MRSA would pet the dog getting some MRSA on it's fur that could then be picked up by another patient.
