Yep, What ^ said. The stare down is for play. Boa does it all the time right before launching into a full sprint hoping the other dog will chase him. Sometimes Boa and another dog at the dog park will go into a stare down from about 20 feet away from each other. Sometimes it lasts a whole minute or 2, but its the beginning of play time, not usually a sign of aggression.
