It definitely depends on the dog because my boy can be switched with no mixing and he does just fine. We found this out when he was a puppy and was having SEVERE diarrhea on a certain food and I figured it wasn't worth taking the time to switch and within a day of switching food his poop was pretty much solid and we've switched without mixing and he's always been fine. However, from reading on here it seems the majority do need at least some mixing so it's better to be safe then sorry.
